Sunday, August 30th, 2009In today’s modern world, discussing an age-old concept such as yoga can be rather challenging.
This ancient concept has somehow lost its real meaning through globalization. The real philosophy behind yoga may be complex, but modern day interpretation of yoga has reduced the confusing structure into a simpler form. Western civilization may find its contents to be mystical and complex, thus finds it hard to understand. In order to be viewed as a person of wisdom, some people who have been exposed to this ancient art have invested their time to learn a little more, only to gain a superficial understanding of the real essence of yoga and then proceed to talk about it as though they are the recognized experts.
Westerners often view yoga as a physical activity. Yoga has been cherished as a form of physical activity that has some beneficial effects on the mind in creating peace and serenity.
It has its origins in the Hindu religion and is a physical manifestation representing one of the six schools of Hindu thought. In India, yoga is considered a very spiritual experience that has a physical aspect to it. Most westerners would describe yoga as a physical practice. The hidden intricacies of this mysterious practice with its strange looking symbols may be successful in making the average westerner aware that there are more to yoga than physical moves alone, but nevertheless they are often misunderstood. It became a popular sport in the west. The allure of yoga as an effective way to gain inner peace and balance has beckoned many to embrace this activity as well.
Almost all who proclaim themselves as yoga masters perpetrate these claims and the masses are undoubtedly fascinated. The numerous amount of fatal errors found in the practice of yoga outside of India shows that this art has been widely misunderstood at large.
A closer look revealed that these errors were caused by the cultural influence of each race. The fast paced lifestyle of the western civilization left no chance for them to indulge in quiet, introspective moments to really understand this concept. While meditation is an integral part of the practice, the westerners with their ever busy lifestyles certainly do not posses time for such luxuries. The west seems obsessed with the desire to accumulate massive amounts of wealth and gaining power, which is a priority according the principles of Hinduism. It is impossible to attain true wisdom that is aligned with the real philosophy of yoga in this state of mind. One crucial aspect essential for a successful meditative session is time and patience. Obviously, the people from the west have no endurance to fulfill such demands.
Yoga is practiced more as a form of recreational activity to fulfill a stylish lifestyle. There are plenty of materials promoting it as a form of sports; you can practice yoga anywhere and anytime you want. There are famous people who embraced this practice and become fake gurus and still they have enough support from their followers. The disciples of these fake gurus are responsible for spreading the influence of the wrong philosophy pertaining to yoga practice.
