Yoga with its mystical enigma and allure proves to be a rather difficult subject to discuss in today’s modern world. It is a pity that modern day globalization has caused this amazing ancient art to be viewed as a distant and mysterious concept. Most people choose to describe yoga as a simple concept rather than a complex philosophy in order to help people understand better. The complex nature of its contents may be a little challenging for westerners to understand. To be on the safe side, it is good to gain a thorough understanding of a particular subject before you begin to speak of it from an expert’s viewpoint. Due to the lack of a deeper understanding, most westerners view yoga as a physical activity. Today, the spiritual aspects of yoga have been diminished into a superficial understanding that places too much emphasized on achieving inner balance and meditative states.

It has its origins in the Hindu religion and is a physical manifestation representing one of the six schools of Hindu thought. Indians understand that is not a mere physical activity, but yoga is part of a spiritual development that is realized through a systematic and disciplined physical approach. It is unfortunate that the western world would approach yoga as a mere physical activity. Yoga with its strange looking symbols may seem mystical to the average Joe, is often enough to perk up a considerable level of interest in the hidden aspects of this ancient practice, but sadly, they are often misunderstood. Operating from the wrong paradigm, yoga became a form of sports in the western world. It also does a good job attracting those who wish to obtain inner peace and balance in the midst of the hectic modern lifestyle.

This perception is often strengthened by the various claims made by the so called yoga masters. Research shows that yoga has been highly misunderstood in the west and therefore plenty of fatal errors were detected in the way yoga is implemented. Different groups practicing yoga have its own cultural structure and these influences are responsible for those fatal errors detected in the practice of this ancient art. It appears that the west is not prepared to pay the price necessary to gain a deeper understanding of this philosophy. While meditation is an integral part of the practice, the westerners with their ever busy lifestyles certainly do not posses time for such luxuries. The Hindus have a different set of value system that is very different from the west, and places low importance in the mere accumulation of physical wealth. It is impossible to attain true wisdom that is aligned with the real philosophy of yoga in this state of mind. It takes patience and time to experience a successful meditative session. Obviously, the people from the west have no endurance to fulfill such demands.

Yoga is practiced more as a form of recreational activity to fulfill a stylish lifestyle. If you are interested to take up yoga as a part of your lifestyle, you can get hold of some of those materials that are available, promoting this practice as a form of sports. Even fake gurus have support from their adoring disciples. The growing influence of this unhealthy philosophy is attributed to the disciples who are loyal in spreading the word about the advantages of adopting this crooked form of yogic philosophy.
