September 27th, 2009 5:01 amYoga is a tough subject to discuss in this century. This ancient art is based on age-old wisdom and philosophy, and yet globalization has diminished its real purpose and meaning. To make it easy for the common man to understand, the whole philosophy has been reduced to a simple concept. In fact, the western civilization might find the full contents of yoga to be a rather difficult subject to relate to. It is disturbing to see a lot of people obtaining shallow understanding of this complex subject and yet remaining unhesitant to talk about it from an expert’s point of view. To simplify things, most westerners choose to emphasize the physical aspects of yoga, while neglecting the more important issues such as the state of mind. The need for simplification has diminished the wisdom of true yoga into a superficial speech that fails to recognize the real purpose and meaning of this wonderful philosophy.
It is one of the six schools of Hindu thoughts has roots deep within the pages of the Hindu Holy Scriptures. Indians understand that is not a mere physical activity, but yoga is part of a spiritual development that is realized through a systematic and disciplined physical approach. Most westerners would describe yoga as a physical practice. Yoga with its strange looking symbols may seem mystical to the average Joe, is often enough to perk up a considerable level of interest in the hidden aspects of this ancient practice, but sadly, they are often misunderstood. Ironically, it is practiced as a popular form of sports. Nevertheless many have been attracted to yoga as a form of practice to achieve inner peace and balance.
People are fascinated by the claims made by the yoga masters who often come with these promises. Research shows that yoga has been highly misunderstood in the west and therefore plenty of fatal errors were detected in the way yoga is implemented. These errors were caused by each racial group’s internal culture and form. Apparently, the west is not prepared to spend too much time in meaningful contemplations of this philosophy, hence the resulting fatal error due to a lack of understanding. For instance, meditation is the crux of this philosophy but busy Americans do not possess the time to spend in a few hours of relative sessions every day. The greed for power and material wealth which is integral in the western culture has no place in the Hindu culture. Perhaps the western man shall never reach the peaks of wisdom according to the parameters set by the Hindu religion and culture. It takes patience and time to experience a successful meditative session. It places high degree of importance in the mere acquisition of wealth and power.
Yoga becomes a stylish endeavor instead of a spiritual experience. There is a lot of information going out promoting yoga as a form of sports; in fact you can grab any of those and start practicing yoga anywhere you want to. Even the famous people who are fake yoga gurus have garnered a lot of support from their disciples. These followers have become the pillars supporting the growth of this false and wrong philosophy.
