It may be taxing to talk about yoga in this century. Globalization is a great accomplishment, yet it is sad when people choose to oversimplify age old wisdoms and knowledge that can bring tremendous benefits to humankind such as yoga. To make it easy for the common man to understand, the whole philosophy has been reduced to a simple concept. Yoga in its true form may be a little complicated for the western world to understand. It is always a risky affair to talk about a complex subject by merely grasping the basics. There is a tendency among the westerners to highlight only the physical aspects of yoga. There is more to yoga than the mere attainment of inner balance and serenity.

This unique practice is actually a religious journey, a representation of one of the Hindu schools of thought. Indians understand that is not a mere physical activity, but yoga is part of a spiritual development that is realized through a systematic and disciplined physical approach. It is unfortunate that the western world would approach yoga as a mere physical activity. Most westerners are aware of the strange symbols associated with yoga practice, but often they are misunderstood. Ironically, it is practiced as a popular form of sports. It also does a good job attracting those who wish to obtain inner peace and balance in the midst of the hectic modern lifestyle.

People are fascinated by the claims made by the yoga masters who often come with these promises. Fatal errors have been detected in the practice of yoga outside of India, showing the level of misunderstanding among the western practitioners. Different groups practicing yoga have its own cultural structure and these influences are responsible for those fatal errors detected in the practice of this ancient art. In order to truly understand this concept moments of quiet, peaceful times are necessary to contemplate on this philosophy, and that is certainly an element that is absent in the hectic lifestyle of the western civilization. Sometimes, the most important part of this practice is neglected, for instance the essential meditation. Westerners have different goals and priorities, and the insatiable desire to accumulate massive amounts of wealth certainly has no place in the system of values among the Hindus. Perhaps the western man shall never reach the peaks of wisdom according to the parameters set by the Hindu religion and culture. It takes patience and time to experience a successful meditative session. This is what the westerners lack.

Yoga has been accepted as a fashion. There are plenty of materials promoting it as a form of sports; you can practice yoga anywhere and anytime you want. Even fake gurus have support from their adoring disciples. These followers have become the pillars supporting the growth of this false and wrong philosophy.
