In today’s modern world, discussing an age-old concept such as yoga can be rather challenging. The real meaning of this ancient concept has been inundated by the quick-fix approach mentality of the modern day globalization. Many would choose to describe yoga as a simple philosophy to help people gain a better understanding. Westerners may find the contents to be complex and not easily understood. It is always a risky affair to talk about a complex subject by merely grasping the basics. It becomes a distorted view when westerners perceive yoga as a physical activity. Yoga has been reduced to a physical activity that focuses merely on achieving internal balance and meditation.

This unique practice is actually a religious journey, a representation of one of the Hindu schools of thought. Indians understand that is not a mere physical activity, but yoga is part of a spiritual development that is realized through a systematic and disciplined physical approach. Most westerners would describe yoga as a physical practice. Yoga with its strange looking symbols may seem mystical to the average Joe, is often enough to perk up a considerable level of interest in the hidden aspects of this ancient practice, but sadly, they are often misunderstood. Ironically, it is practiced as a popular form of sports. The allure of yoga as an effective way to gain inner peace and balance has beckoned many to embrace this activity as well.

This perception is often strengthened by the various claims made by the so called yoga masters. Outside of India, that there is a high level of misunderstanding of its true nature, hence the monumental amount of mistakes that can be found in its implementation. The culture and structure of each different group influenced how yoga is being practiced. It appears that the west is not prepared to pay the price necessary to gain a deeper understanding of this philosophy. For instance, meditation is the crux of this philosophy but busy Americans do not possess the time to spend in a few hours of relative sessions every day. The greed for power and material wealth which is integral in the western culture has no place in the Hindu culture. True wisdom, as defined by the parameters of the Hindu religion would be an impossible feat to achieve when this paradigm is adopted. It takes patience and time to experience a successful meditative session. The westerners do not view investment in such contemplative moments for the attainment of philosophical wisdom to be beneficial.

Here, yoga as been practiced by those who desire to look good and stay in style. If you are interested to take up yoga as a part of your lifestyle, you can get hold of some of those materials that are available, promoting this practice as a form of sports. Even fake gurus have support from their adoring disciples. The growing influence of this unhealthy philosophy is attributed to the disciples who are loyal in spreading the word about the advantages of adopting this crooked form of yogic philosophy.
