Yoga does not seem to command the same form of respect from modern day society as it once did in the past. This ancient art is based on age-old wisdom and philosophy, and yet globalization has diminished its real purpose and meaning. The whole philosophy of yoga has been reduced to a simpler concept to help people understand the concept better. In fact, the western civilization might find the full contents of yoga to be a rather difficult subject to relate to. In order to be viewed as a person of wisdom, some people who have been exposed to this ancient art have invested their time to learn a little more, only to gain a superficial understanding of the real essence of yoga and then proceed to talk about it as though they are the recognized experts. Yoga is often viewed as a physical journey, instead of a spiritual one in the western part of the world. The rich philosophies behind yoga practice have been reduced into a simple form of art that focuses merely on achieving inner balance and peace.

In reality, yoga practice is a very sacred journey that has roots buried deep within the scriptures of an ancient Holy book. In India, yoga is considered a very spiritual experience that has a physical aspect to it. It is unfortunate that the western world would approach yoga as a mere physical activity. Most westerners are aware of the strange symbols associated with yoga practice, but often they are misunderstood. It became a popular sport in the west. It also does a good job attracting those who wish to obtain inner peace and balance in the midst of the hectic modern lifestyle.

People are fascinated by the claims made by the yoga masters who often come with these promises. There is plenty of evidence to show that yoga has been wrongly implemented in the West. Different groups practicing yoga have its own cultural structure and these influences are responsible for those fatal errors detected in the practice of this ancient art. The western busy lifestyles certainly do not provide much space to contemplate on this philosophy. For instance, meditation is the crux of this philosophy but busy Americans do not possess the time to spend in a few hours of relative sessions every day. Westerners have different goals and priorities, and the insatiable desire to accumulate massive amounts of wealth certainly has no place in the system of values among the Hindus. Therefore, it is believed that the westerners will never reach the pinnacles of true wisdom dictated by the parameters of the Hindu religion. One crucial aspect essential for a successful meditative session is time and patience. Obsessed with the need to accumulate as much wealth as possible, therefore the thought of having to spend time in such sessions would be considered a mere waste of precious time.

Ironically, yoga has been implemented as fashion in the western part of the world. If you are interested to take up yoga as a part of your lifestyle, you can get hold of some of those materials that are available, promoting this practice as a form of sports. Even fake gurus have support from their adoring disciples. Obedient disciples of this distorted form of yoga have become agents of growth of this unhealthy philosophy.
