In today’s modern world, discussing an age-old concept such as yoga can be rather challenging. This ancient art is based on age-old wisdom and philosophy, and yet globalization has diminished its real purpose and meaning. In an attempt to make things easier, people have reduced a whole philosophy into one simple concept. Most westerners might find the contents of yoga to be rather complicated and hard to relate to. It is unwise to gain a shallow knowledge about a diverse topic and yet speaks about it from an expert’s viewpoint. Yoga is often viewed as a physical journey, instead of a spiritual one in the western part of the world. There is more to yoga than the mere attainment of inner balance and serenity.

It is one of the six schools of Hindu thoughts has roots deep within the pages of the Hindu Holy Scriptures. In the faraway land of India, it is recognized as a spiritual practice that includes a series of complex and systematic physical moves. It is unfortunate that the western world would approach yoga as a mere physical activity. The hidden intricacies of this mysterious practice with its strange looking symbols may be successful in making the average westerner aware that there are more to yoga than physical moves alone, but nevertheless they are often misunderstood. Ironically, it is practiced as a popular form of sports. The allure of yoga as an effective way to gain inner peace and balance has beckoned many to embrace this activity as well.

The so called experts in this industry have been quick to use these promises and people have been fascinated. Research shows that yoga has been highly misunderstood in the west and therefore plenty of fatal errors were detected in the way yoga is implemented. Closer observation reveals that the unique culture of each race has dramatically influenced the way yoga is practiced. It appears that the west is not prepared to pay the price necessary to gain a deeper understanding of this philosophy. For instance, meditation is the crux of this philosophy but busy Americans do not possess the time to spend in a few hours of relative sessions every day. The west seems obsessed with the desire to accumulate massive amounts of wealth and gaining power, which is a priority according the principles of Hinduism. True wisdom, as defined by the parameters of the Hindu religion would be an impossible feat to achieve when this paradigm is adopted. To gain maximum benefits from each meditation session, one needs to spare time and exercise tremendous patience in carrying out each essential part of the practice. The west seems cursed with the obsession to pursue the goal of building better lives in the form of lavish lifestyles and not in the philosophical way.

Practicing yoga seems congruent with the need to look good to fulfill their stylish lifestyles. There are plenty of materials promoting it as a form of sports; you can practice yoga anywhere and anytime you want. Even fake gurus have support from their adoring disciples. The growing influence of this unhealthy philosophy is attributed to the disciples who are loyal in spreading the word about the advantages of adopting this crooked form of yogic philosophy.
