yoga for the rest of us
December 31st, 2008 4:01 amYoga does not seem to command the same form of respect from modern day society as it once did in the past. It is a pity that modern day globalization has caused this amazing ancient art to be viewed as a distant and mysterious concept. Many would choose to describe yoga as a simple philosophy to help people gain a better understanding. In fact, the western civilization might find the full contents of yoga to be a rather difficult subject to relate to. It is unwise to gain a shallow knowledge about a diverse topic and yet speaks about it from an expert’s viewpoint. Yoga is often viewed as a physical journey, instead of a spiritual one in the western part of the world. Yoga has been reduced to a physical activity to achieve internal balance and serenity.
In reality, yoga practice is a very sacred journey that has roots buried deep within the scriptures of an ancient Holy book. Any Indian would assure you that it is a spiritual experience that is manifested through a series of complicated physical practice. But the western world prefers to refer yoga as a mere physical practice. Most westerners are aware of the strange symbols associated with yoga practice, but often they are misunderstood. It is practiced as a popular sport. Nevertheless many have been attracted to yoga as a form of practice to achieve inner peace and balance.
The so called experts in this industry have been quick to use these promises and people have been fascinated. There is plenty of evidence to show that yoga has been wrongly implemented in the West. Different groups practicing yoga have its own cultural structure and these influences are responsible for those fatal errors detected in the practice of this ancient art. The western busy lifestyles certainly do not provide much space to contemplate on this philosophy. Most Americans do not possess the time to spend moments in meaningful sessions of quiet meditation, which is essential for success when embracing this practice. The principle of Hinduism that governs the yoga practice does not recognize the greed for power and wealth, which is obviously a value of prime importance in the western world. Unless these values are changed, it is impossible for westerners to achieve the true wisdom and enlightenment as defined by the parameters of the Hindu religion. One crucial aspect essential for a successful meditative session is time and patience. Obviously, the people from the west have no endurance to fulfill such demands.
Yoga has been accepted as a fashion. If you are interested to take up yoga as a part of your lifestyle, you can get hold of some of those materials that are available, promoting this practice as a form of sports. During the early years of yoga practice in the US, a lot of yoga ‘gurus’ have emerged, claiming to be experts of this discipline; yet they gradually dwindled into what they actually are - merely fake gurus and yet they still have real support from their disciples. The growing influence of this unhealthy philosophy is attributed to the disciples who are loyal in spreading the word about the advantages of adopting this crooked form of yogic philosophy.
